Family of four ditches mainstream, to travel full-time in Airstream
Imagine selling (nearly) everything you own – including your 2,000 square foot house and moving your family of 4 into a 180 square foot Airstream trailer – to travel around the United States for a year. That’s what the Clarke family of Olympia, Washington is about to do.
“We’ve spent the last 12 years pursuing the American Dream – a 2,000 square foot house, two cars, two full-time jobs, a couple vacations a year, kids in school – we worked extremely hard and were very happy and blessed,” shares Heather Clarke
But the Clarke family wanted something more. . . well actually a lot less. Tired of the stuff, the excess, the clutter, the stress – Heather and Jeremy Clarke decided to make a drastic change to live full-time in an 30-foot shiny Airstream trailer and travel across the country with their kids, Liam (age 7) and Hadley (age 4). They plan to embark on their journey June 14, 2015.
Jeremy, a high-school teacher, resigned from his job for this next year and will shift his teaching responsibilities to homeschooling the kids on the road. Heather, a full-time blogger, will continue to work while they travel. Home will be where ever they park for the night – most often in National and state parks and the occasional RV park along the way.
“We want to instill in our kids a value for travel and an appreciation for various cultures. I want them to see what a beautiful country we live in and to learn it’s history, nature and cultures, firsthand,” says Heather
Jeremy adds, “We’re making a drastic conscious change – to live with less – so that we can experience MORE. Less square footage – more fresh air, open space and nature. Less stuff – more experiences. Less work – more quality time. Less distractions – more memories.”
Thanks to living frugally for many years (coupons, sales, doing without), the Clarke Family paid cash for their truck and trailer and will be traveling debt-free around the country. They’ll be sharing their adventures at TakeThatExit.com.
